Portrait of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientific director of the Manhattan Project.
On July 16, 1945, the Trinity Test marked the birth of the atomic age. But on July 17, a new resistance emerged: dozens of scientists from the Manhattan Project urged the U.S. government not to use nuclear weapons against Japan without warning or offering surrender. They feared it would unleash “an era of devastation on an unimaginable scale.” This painting honors that critical pivot point—a moral reckoning that still echoes today.
