Frenzied escape meets fierce folklore in this bold take on Spain’s Running of the Bulls, reimagined with chaos and symbolism.

Running From the Bulls

acrylic/mixed on paper

Collaborative painting by Dana Ellyn & Matt Sesow.

A chaotic gathering sparked by Elon Musk’s third-party tease—this painting captures America’s fractured identity, with the scene fueled by booze and a medley of emotions.

The black paper used in this painting was sourced directly from the Felix Gonzalez-Torres exhibition “Always to Return” at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. Specifically, it came from the paper stack titled “Untitled” (Party Platform – 1980–1992), which invites visitors to take a sheet as part of the conceptual work. This is the third time Matt Sesow has incorporated paper from a Gonzalez-Torres installation into his own artwork.
